The subject of Computer aided translation, which is part of the Translation technologies profile, focuses on the translation process carried out by means of a specific computer tool.
The subject is dedicated to know thoroughly the process of working with a CAT tool, an essential resource both in the language services of large multilingual organizations (UN, EU, FAO, etc.) and in translation companies that manage volumes of medium to large texts, or even as a self-employed translator or group of translators that should optimize their productivity to win profit margin without lowering the standards of professional quality.
The approach of the subject simulates several translation orders managed in a translation company, which would need to be resolved individually. Throughout the translation process, two software tools (memoQ and SDLTrados) will be known thoroughly, the different processes associated with orders of this nature will be analysed and the dynamics of the autonomous learning will be strengthened.

Learning outcomes
RA6. You will plan the use of tools and design translation projects taking them into account:
- Identifying and managing the key elements involved in the quality management of a computer-assisted translation or localisation project.
- Preparing a computer-assisted translation project, from design to final delivery, with special emphasis on quality control aspects and using the most appropriate tools and resources according to the objectives and results to be achieved.
RA7. You will become an advanced user of computer aided translation tools:
- Managing the collection of memories and glossaries in standard formats, improving their quality and updating them: conversions between proprietary and standard formats, editing and deleting translation units, searching and filtering data in the memory.
- Translating a specialised text in any language pair, optimising the translation/localisation process with the appropriate IT tools and achieving a translation speed of more than 500 w/h with texts similar to the memories and with terminology resources prepared in advance.
- Efficiently searching for and evaluating the information necessary to carry out terminology management and a computer-assisted translation or localisation project.
- Applying knowledge of legal and economic aspects associated with the implementation of a linguistic project using computer tools.

Contents
1. Computer-assisted translation tools and translation memory. Comparison between products on the market. Exchange of information between products and programmes.
2. Document management with commercial computer-assisted translation tools.
3. The modules of a computer-assisted translation system: text alignment, terminology management, translation memory, text editor.
4. Computer-assisted translation technologies: calculation of segment leveraging, processing of numbers and other non-significant elements. Predictive writing.
5. Designing and carrying out a computer-assisted translation project in a professional environment.
6. Management of translations and their quality in a professional environment using computer-assisted translation tools.
7. The professional, legal and economic aspects of a translation project carried out with computer-assisted translation tools.
Teaching Methods
In this subject, students will be introduced to two professional computer aided translation tools (MemoQ / SDL Trados Studio).
Knowledge and practice of this professional translation environment will take place during the same translation process that will be used during the classes. All classes, both theoretical and practical, will be made on computers with the appropriate software.
The course will consist of explanations about the operation of tools and different processes of work that will be carried out (large group sessions), as well as individual and collective work sessions guided by the teacher (seminar sessions).
For each learning session with the translation tool / terminological manager, students will receive specific working materials (guidelines and help texts).
The distribution of the educational activity is approximately the following:
1) Master classes: 15%
2) Seminars: 10%
3) Face-to-face tutoring sessions: 5%
4) Individual work: 70%
Evaluation
Regular examination
The course work consists of the individual translation of several html documents (seminar tasks) using the two CAT tools studied.
The regular examination is made up as follows: 40% from the evaluation of the delivered tasks (compulsory) and 60% from the final test:
· 4 points for correctly submitted tasks (1 point per task: initial glossary / exported TMX file / exported TBX file / exported final project)
· 6 points from the final test (speed (3, 2, 1 or 0 points) and quality (3, 2, 1 or 0 points)).
The final test will consist of a practical exercice: complete translation of a document with one of the two translation tools studied. The mark will be related to the time invested in the translation and the quality of the final text.
Reassessment examination
If the student fails the regular examination, reassessment examination of the subject will consist of:
1. Presentation of missing tasks or files.
2. Repetition of the final test
As a result, the maximum mark which can be obtained at the reassessment will be a 7, Notable. The examination is made up as follows: 40% from the evaluation of the delivered tasks (compulsory) and 60% from the final test.
During the period covered by reassessment examination, which can be extended from the end of the regular classes of the subject until the beginning of July, a student who has failed shall be entitled to a maximum of three tutoring sessions to discuss problems and clarify doubts.
In accordance with the regulations approved by the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, only students who have failed the regular examination will be offered the reassessment attempt, i.e., a student who has not attempted regular examination is not eligible for reassessment examination.
